  • Construction begins for the future heart of “Quartier Heidestrasse” and the northern Europacity
  • “Mix it like Berlin”: QH Core combines residences, offices, retail and gastronomy in some 28,700 square meters
  • Completion of the first component of the “Quartier Heidestrasse” is planned for mid-2020

Berlin, 20 September 2018. In the presence of Governing Mayor Michael Müller the cornerstone was laid for QH Core, the first project component in the future Quartier Heidestrasse, not far from Berlin’s central station.

QH Core will become the heart of the Quartier and the northern Europacity, a local centre for supply of everyday needs as well as a residential and office location, the junction of many routes. It will become a highly frequented, lively place for all the Quartier’s residents, visitors and tenants. The red brick facades, reminiscent of the location’s industrial past, make this building, designed by ROBERTNEUNTM Architects, the highly visible focus of the Quartier Heidestrasse.

Berlin’s Governing Mayor, Michael Müller: “What makes the Quartier smart?”

The celebratory ceremony preceded a podium discussion of the question “What makes the Quartier smart?” Discussing together with Berlin’s Governing Mayor, Michael Müller, were David Martínez García, Project Director 22@ Committee, BIT Habitat – Barcelona City Council, Prof Raoul Bunschoten, Institut für Architektur of the TU Berlin, head of the department of urban planning and sustainable urban development, and Thomas Bergander, managing director of Taurecon Real Estate Consulting GmbH, developers of Quartier Heidestrasse. The subjects included what makes Quartiers smart and sustainable? What roles do tenant mix, space and traffic planning play and how can all these demands be met?

The exchange among international partners like the Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology as well as cooperation with universities is very important for the Quartier Heidestrasse. Since the project developer, Taurecon, also aims to integrate new e-mobility concepts in Berlin’s Quartier Heidestrasse cooperation with research institutions are to serve this purpose.

The Governing Mayor Michael Müller explained: “The laying of the foundation stone today is not only a milestone for the Quartier Heidestrasse, but also sets an important accent for Berlin’s further development. The new Berlin mix realised in Quartier Heidestrasse points in the right direction in many aspects: Berlin will remain ready for the future if it is able to master the complex functional, economic, social and also ecological demands. People should want to live in our city and we want Berlin to remain attractive well beyond the city limits. I wish QH Core, the Quartier Heidestrasse as well as the entire Europacity continued success and all the best for the people who live and work here in an defining, modern environment.”

Thomas Bergander: “Development of a completely new urban quarter in the centre of Berlin”

Thomas Bergander, managing director of Taurecon Real Estate Consulting GmbH, said: “We are pleased that starting today the project development of Quartier Heidestrasse will be highly visible for everyone in the city. What has begun with the laying of the foundation stone for the project component QH Core is the development of a completely new urban quarter in the centre of Berlin. Our aim is to develop the west side of the Heidestrasse into a lively location by 2023, a place where people feel good, whether they work, live or enjoy their free time here. The success of the Quartier development has been in no small part due to the fine cooperation with the City and the responsible offices in District Mitte, all of whom I want to thank expressly.”

Quartier Heidestrasse in the northwest part of Berlin-Mitte and the Europacity

The Quartier Heidestrasse, located in the northwest part of Berlin-Mitte in the Europacity, is being developed as a lively new “kiez” (Berlin dialect for “neighbourhood) comprising residential and office buildings, businesses, public roads and squares as well as green areas. Cafés, restaurants and mixed-use building complexes such as QH Core in the Quartier’s centre create a pleasant, trendy living and working climate. Altogether some 268,000 m² of gross floor space (BGF) are planned for Quartier Heidestrasse. One of the ensembles under construction is planned exclusively for modern office use. Finally some 920 apartments will also be built in the Quartier—25 per cent of which are subsidised housing units in the terms of the Berlin model of cooperative construction development.

QH Core, as the Quartier’s first project component is expected to be ready for occupation by mid-2020.
